1:16 I thought to myself, 1 

“I have become much wiser 2  than any of my predecessors who ruled 3  over Jerusalem; 4 

I 5  have acquired much wisdom and knowledge.” 6 

1:17 So I decided 7  to discern the benefit of 8  wisdom and knowledge over 9  foolish behavior and ideas; 10 

however, I concluded 11  that even 12  this endeavor 13  is like 14  trying to chase the wind! 15 

1:18 For with great wisdom comes 16  great frustration;

whoever increases his 17  knowledge merely 18  increases his 19  heartache.

[1:16]  1 tn Heb “I spoke, I, with my heart.”

[1:16]  2 tn Heb “I, look, I have made great and increased wisdom.” The expression הִגְדַּלְתִּי וְהוֹסַפְתִּי (higdalti vÿhosafti) is a verbal hendiadys; it means that Qoheleth had become the wisest man in the history of Jerusalem.
